Update on upcoming movies - local

Update on the list of movies that I wanted to see this year (..and next year). Here are some of the promising upcoming feature films by our very own local filmmakers. I really can't wait...

  1. Puaka Tebing Biru - a horror film directed by Osman Ali and stars Nasha Aziz, Umie Aida and Sharifah Amani among others. Could this be our Ringu or Ju-On? Hope so.

  2. Susuk - Another horror this time directed by Amir Muhammad. The topic itself is very interesting and never have been discussed as a subject matter in a movie.

  3. Lelaki Komunis Terakhir - Another one from Amir Muhammad. It's about the notorious Chin Peng. It's part musical, part docudrama and part road movie. Now THAT I have to see..

  4. Love Conquers All - Directed by Tan Chui Mui who is also the producer of Chemman Chaalai. Don't you think it's time for Malaysia to have a decent romantic movie?

  5. Rain Dogs - Directed by Ho Yuhang. It marks the collaboration of Yuhang with Andy Lau's film company and will feature appearances by Yasmin Ahmad and Pete Teo. Should be great.

  6. The 3rd Generation - CL Hor helmed this one. One of the first local Chinese feature films in a long time. Plus Carmen Soo and Amber Chia is in it. Nice.

  7. The Flowers Beneath My Skin - Directed by Kit Ong. Another horror. But more disturbing than scary. Will feature scenes that contains foot binding, castration and skin peeling. And it's a silent movie(!). Can't wait to see how the public will react to this one.

  8. Gubra - Everyone knows that this is going to be another masterpiece by Yasmin Ahmad. And I know everyone wants to see this.

  9. Baik Punya Cilok - Directed by the only local Malay comedian that matters right now, Afdlin Shauki. The early poster prints of the movie reminded me of Reservoir Dogs - but funny. It should be a 'tendang bontot' (..Afdlin's own word!) movie.

  10. Buli Balik - Another one by Afdlin. Enjoyed Buli very much. Hope this will turn out better. Can a sequel be better than the original? If it can, this might turns out to be our own Godfather Part 2! (..well, not quite exactly.)

  11. Rock - Mamat Khalid's tribute to 80's rock 'kapak', the days of big hair, tight spandex, bad fashion and great music. This will bring back memories..

Interesting aren't they? What makes it even more interesting is that these movies are Made in Malaysia by Malaysian. I hope these movies will be seen by a lot of people so that they could know and realize how much Malaysian cinema has grown. And how I just wish Puaka Tebing Biru and Susuk will scare the living hell out of you. To tell you the truth, I had enough of Prof Razak labeling his useless craps such as Mistik and Potret Mistik as a 'horror' films. His whole idea of a horror film involved mindless annoying screamings of women from start to end. Come on, Osman and Amir! Show him the right way to do it...!

Jimi, Prof Razak membuat aku malu nak mengaku yg aku pernah belajar di institusi yg sama...

Sadako ? Yeah, please. We don't need another gait and pale ladies with rebonded hair to scare the hell outta us this time.

jimi.. Prof Razak is not a filmmaker, he's a moneymaker. Selagi ada audience Malaysia yang suka dengan his crap, selagi tu la dia akan buat filem.. Don't u think that he is the updated version of Z. Lokman..?

fadz, zack.. i hope so too. I had a feeling Susuk will be very creepy. Remember Hafsham's Rahsia? I think that is an example of a very well made local horror movie.

Anyone else has a favourite local horror movie?

"Don't you think it's time for Malaysia to have a decent romantic movie?" -- are u trying to say that sepet wasn't "decent" enough?? who ever said sepet is not a great romantic flick should be burned alive.

Edd Vedder said...

Whoa.. hold ur horses there cowboy.! If u read my previous posts you'll probably notice how much I love Yasmin Ahmad and Sepet. I never said that Sepet wasn't 'decent' enough. It probably wasn't 'romantic' enough for me.. I think Sepet is not a romantic flick but a wonderful love story about life itself.. It's a great movie and I love it.

But what I'm saying is I had enough of Sembilu, Tragedi Oktober, Maria Mariana or any of those type of movie that proudly claim itself as a 'romantic' movie. There's too many of those type of movies right now that I think it's time that we should have a decent romantic movie. ...know what I'm saying?

Why can't we make romantic movies like the Koreans and the Japanese..? Movies that remind us of how wonderful love is. Well-polished story that makes us all feel like helpless romantics. That's all I'm asking. No need to burn me alive right?

:)
